You can take the gymnast out of the gym...

...but you can't take gymnastics out of the gymnast.

It's been a year and a half since I began breaking (that's break dancing for you mainstream folks) and I thought I had neutralized all of my gymnastics habits- such as pointing my toes, raising my arms in a salute before I go for a handstand.

And then I saw this- a picture taken at my first bgirl battle. I'm in the middle of doing footwork and I flick my wrist, gymnast style. I wonder if that's the reason I didn't make it out of the preliminary rounds of battle.

At least I didn't point my toes.

More fallout from the Daily News article

So after my Pulitzer worthy 500 word account appeared in the New York Daily News, some producers at Channel One, a daily news show geared towards junior high and school students read the article and sent a reporter, camera man and crew to Bushwick practice to do another story about the legendary, Break Easy (aka Papa Rich, aka Richie Santiago).

It is pretty well-done, replete with some old school b-boy shots of Break Easy as a teen. And like I've said many times- this man is incredible and deserves all the props he gets.

(Sadly, none of my breaking made it into the final cut though I was in fine form at that practice. I was interviewed after a very sweaty workout and did my best to purty up for the camera, but I still ended up looking like a hot mess. That, and the fact that my eyes seem to be rolling backwards cause I spent the entirety of my interview trying to make eye contact with the 6'5" reporter)

Breaking segment appears towards the end- around 3 minutes in.
